The city gate of Yarkand The beautiful oasis city and county Yarkand (also known as Sache) is administered under Kashgar prefecture, in the southwest of Xinjiang district. It is populated by about 400.000 people.
Yarkand is located on the southern rim of the Taklamakan desert in the Tarim Basin. The place was the seat of several ancient kingdoms, including a Buddhist kingdom, on the southern branch of the Silk Road.
The fertile oasis is fed by the Yarkand River which flows from the Kunlun Mountains to the north.
